Two people were hospitalized after a rear-end collision involving an impaired motorist on Georgia State Route 400 near Mary Alice Bridge in Cumming, Georgia, on Saturday night.
According to the Cumming Police Department, Gavin Schmutzer was arrested on suspicion of DUI following the crash. Investigators said Schmutzer was driving a Ford F-150 northbound when he reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance and struck the rear of a Kia SUV around 11:30 p.m.
The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles, and emergency responders rushed to the scene. Two occupants of the Kia suffered serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital, where one victim remains in the ICU in critical condition.
Authorities believe Schmutzer was following too closely and under the influence at the time of the crash. He was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including DUI, following too closely, and causing injury by vehicle.
Traffic on the highway was temporarily halted as officers investigated the car crash, with lanes reopening early Sunday morning.
The Cumming Police Department continues to investigate the incident to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the collision.
